The Fisheye-Nikkor Auto 16mm F3.5 is a landmark full-frame fisheye manual focus prime lens originally introduced by Nikon in 1973. Unlike circular fisheye optics, this lens fills the entire 35mm film or digital sensor frame with a striking 180-degree diagonal field of view, delivering iconic curvilinear distortion, dramatic prospective compression, and unmatched creative flexibility.

A distinctive engineering highlight of the 16mm f/3.5 is its built-in revolving filter turret. Because the bulbous front element precludes traditional front-threaded filters, Nikon built a internal rotating filter selector into the barrel, offering four integral optical filters: L1BC (Skylight), Y48 (Yellow), O56 (Orange), and R60 (Red) for color correction and black-and-white contrast control.

Optically constructed with 8 elements in 5 groups, the lens delivers surprising edge-to-edge resolution and high contrast when stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8. Featuring an all-metal chassis, a close 0.30m minimum focusing distance, and a 7-blade diaphragm, most surviving units have been converted to the Nikon Ai (Aperture Indexing) standard, allowing safe mounting and full aperture-priority metering on modern Nikon SLRs, DSLRs, and mirrorless bodies via FTZ adapters.
